Gulf Coast Observer - IndexGulf Coast Observer - MississippiGulfCoastObserver - IndexOcean Springs, MS--I hope that everyone is
doing fine and prospering. These days of our
lives are as challenging as ever been in the history
of the world. Not necessarily worse than
ever before, but simply as challenging. I do believe
that we on the Gulf Coast, the folks in the
mid west that we’re flooded so severely, the
Californians that faced the rings of fires, to the
small towns like Greensburg, Kansas that faced
total devastation, actually have more resolve to
face the economic crisis we seem to be in. I
know that I personally changed after Katrina.
I am a stronger person now that realizes material
Stuff is just Stuff; money is nice, but our
happiness comes from the companionship of
Family and Friends.
I do believe that my children think that I have
stepped back in time and reconnected with my
old Hippie days. Now, there’s nothing wrong
with that but due to what is happening in our
world today, I find myself longing to plant a
family garden, save energy, carry shopping bags
when I shop rather than using plastic or wasting
paper bags and even seriously learning how
to recycle and conserve energy. Maybe we old
Hippies should have never grown up. Most of
these ideas were our battle cry in the early 70s.
Well, it’s time we get back to the basics.
We are actually going to have a ‘family’ garden
this year. We are going to all work the soil,
ShedHead Blues
plant the vegetables; harvest whatever might
grow for us…TOGETHER. That’s the KEY
due to the fact that last year Craig and I planted
a good sized garden, did what we knew to do
(which was absolutely nothing) and at harvest
time our entire harvest fit on one paper towel.
I have the pictures to prove it. But this garden
will be different because we have 9 people that
don’t know what they are doing, but we’re
going to do it TOGETHER. Why I’ve even
purchased ‘garden’ outfits for we girls. If we
don’t get a bean to grow, we’ll still look ‘hot’
and we will have wonderful, fun memories and
share funny stories for years to come I’m sure.
